NEXCOM Associate Nominated for “Heroes at Home” Military Spouse Award
“Heroes at Home” recognized Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) Associate, Allison Mercer, NEXCOM, Marketing Strategy & Communications Manager, for her strength, sacrifices, volunteerism and support of the military community. Mercer, a supportive military spouse, was nominated for her efforts with Dogs on Deployment, USO of Hampton Roads and Alliance of Therapy Animals.
“We are honored to have military spouses like Allison as part of our team,” said Rear Adm. Robert J. Bianchi (Ret), Chief Executive Officer, NEXCOM. “Our mission is to provide quality of life programs to our Sailors and their families. We are very fortunate to have spouses like Allison who understand the military way of life and can provide valuable insight to other associates within the organization!”
“Heroes at Home” is a regional recognition program that honors military spouses for their important contributions to local communities. Mercer was nominated because she exemplifies what the award stands for— her impact in the community and empowering other military spouses to further serve and support our great nation and their loved one.
Mercer has been married to Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Joseph Mercer for three years and has experienced deployments and multiple permanent change of station (PCS) moves. She is a proud military spouse who believes in being part of something greater than herself.
“Military life can bring out the best in you or the worst in you,” Mercer says. “My advice to other military spouses is to focus on the good, make great friends and keep in touch when military life takes you to different duty stations and try your best not to play the comparison game. At the end of the day, it's not about how many deployments your spouse has done while you are married or what life events they had to miss, we are all on our own military journey and a battle one person is fighting is no less than what another person is going through. And finally, when you are at the gas pump and it is raining and cold, you will almost always be asked for your billing zip code. It's ok if you break down in tears because you don't remember what it is, it happens to the best of us!".
